Thyroid Hormone Treatment
One in every seven Americans experiences symptoms that are related to low thyroid (hypothyroidism). The thyroid gland is responsible for metabolism and energy. Low thyroid levels can result from genetics, menopause, viruses, iodine deficiencies, physical trauma, autoimmune disease and environmental toxins. Unfortunately, many cases go undiagnosed and are left untreated and ignored. The Center for Anti-Aging and Metabolic Medicine offers specialized testing to help diagnose and treat each patient properly.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Constipation
- Dry skin and hair
- Hair loss
- Puffiness or facial swelling
- Muscle aches and weakness
- Heavy menstrual periods
- Brittle hair and nails
- Depression
- Cold intolerance
- Memory loss
- Accelerated aging
Although hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is the most common issue, some people may experience an overactive thyroid, known as hyperthyroidism.
Some symptoms of hyperthyroidism might include:
- Nervousness
- Irritability
- Increased perspiration
- Thinning skin
- Brittle hair
- Muscular weakness
- Shaky hands
- Panic disorders
- Insomnia
- Racing heart
- Frequent bowel movements
- Weight loss
- Light menstrual periods
Thyroid Testing
Detailed testing is critical when assessing thyroid function. Most physicians perform a standard TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test when evaluating the thyroid. At the Center for Anti-Aging and Metabolic Medicine, your lab work will include specialized testing of the thyroid that is much more accurate for treating and diagnosing patients.
In addition to the standard TSH, tests include a free T4 (thyroxine), free T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and reverse rT3 (tri-iodothyronine). The T3 and T4 are the active thyroid hormones stimulated by the thyroid by the TSH levels. Patients may experience symptoms of thyroid disorders if any of these are low. The reverse T3 is the inactive thyroid hormone and will cause hypothyroidism as well.
It is also important to test for thyroid antibodies. This will give your doctor an indication of, as these can indicate an autoimmune thyroid disorder. By thoroughly testing all of these important thyroid levels, we can treat you properly ensure proper treatment.
Thryoid Hormone Treatment
Our goal is to keep your thyroid levels at an optimal range, not just “average” or “normal.” This approach will help you feel your best throughout the day and improve your energy and sense of well-being.
Patients are generally treated for hypothyroidism with a synthetic thyroid (man-made) hormone that will improve the TSH and T4 levels in the blood. However, not all patients get the relief they need with this method because T4 must be converted to T3 in the body to be used and improve symptoms. Without enough active T3, symptoms will still exist.
The Center for Anti-Aging and Metabolic Medicine will use lab tests to prescribe bioidentical (molecularly similar) hormones to treat patients when indicated. Treatment is customized for each individual and can include different forms of T3 and T4 replacement. Plans include specific recommendations for diet, lifestyle and high-quality supplements.
