Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is derived from your body by taking a venous blood sample, placing it into a special tube and spinning the blood in a centrifuge. This process separates whole blood into red blood cells, platelets and plasma. The middle layer consists of PRP, which contains highly concentrated platelets and specialized chemicals called growth factors. These growth factors stimulate a healing response, reduce inflammation and build collagen.
PRP has been used since 1987 for dental, orthopedic and plastic surgery procedures. More recently, PRP has been used for many aesthetic purposes, such as improving skin texture and promoting a youthful appearance.
Microneedling with PRP for Enhanced Results
Microneedling can be done with PRP or serums like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. Many studies have compared the effectiveness of PRP and serums in treating acne scars and other skin concerns. For example, a study in the Journal of Aesthetic Surgery compared microneedling with PRP to microneedling with vitamin C for severe acne scarring. After four treatments, the study revealed that microneedling with PRP significantly reduced acne scar severity, while vitamin C showed minimal results.
When combined with microneedling, PRP is effective for treating:
- Aged, sagging skin
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Smokers' lines around the lips
- Skin tightening and rejuvenation
- Large pores
- Stretch marks
- Scars (acne, surgical and burns)
- Alopecia
- And much more…
